Oh, the Things You Can Do! With Your DJI Osmo Mobile 2

Who doesn’t love taking videos with their phones? Some of us, though, love it so much that having a snazzy smart phone able to take top-quality videos just isn’t enough.

Maybe you hang out in a lot of cool places. Maybe those places are beyond city limits, or even beyond your borders. Maybe those places are so cool, you just have to vlog about them, and your videos find their way into social media or video sharing sites. Maybe your long-term outlook is “Vlogs today, Hollywood tomorrow”.

If this is you, then you need a DJI Osmo Mobile 2.

Because when you start looking around for accessories to help you take better smart phone videos, you won’t want just any ol’ selfie stick. You’ll want a Gimbal Stabilizer that works with your Apple or Android phone, and takes your videos to a whole new level of professionalism by using motors to counter your phone camera’s movements for steadier, ready-to-share shots.

Just install the DJI Go app and Go!

As DJI’s latest foray into handheld gimbals, the Osmo Mobile 2 uses Bluetooth to connect to any phone measuring 58.6 to 84.8 mm wide and up to 8.4 mm thick. Once you get a load of all the cool things you’ll be able to do, you’ll wonder how you were ever able to shoot video without an Osmo 2. All you have to do is install the free DJI Go app and you’re good to go.

DJI Go App and OSMO Mobile 2

Super smooth shooting. Your DJI Osmo Mobile 2 stabilises your smart phone as you shoot while walking, significantly lessening and smoothing out the up-and-down camera movement that comes naturally with such motion shots. No more jarring or jerky videos, even while turning at sharp angles, panning or tilting.

Walk and Run Modes.

The gimbal adjusts its speed to your movement, with a faster reaction time while you’re running.

Active Track.

If you point your camera at your subject and it starts to move around, the Osmo 2’s built-in AI will automatically track its movements and move your camera to make sure the subject isn’t lost. Modes include SmoothTrack, ActiveLock and Face Tracking.

Motion lapse.

This awesome feature doesn’t just let you take time lapse videos, but lets you take them while panning and tilting the camera for a far more impressive effect. Be sure to check out the new Hyperlapse mode.

Cinematic Zoom Control.

DJI Osmo Mobile 2 gives you the ability to make fluid zoom effects such as dolly shots that are usually only possible with professional filmmaking equipment. Awesome panoramic shots. Take high-definition panoramic photos which Osmo automatically assembles into seamless high-definition images. You’ll also be able to capture long exposures even without a tripod.

Portrait and landscape orientation.

Shooting portrait-oriented videos are great for live streams or if you plan on posting your work on Facebook or Instagram. Beautify Mode. Bound to be a vloggers’s best friend, this mode makes sure you always look great on camera.

Long-Lasting Battery.

Shoot and live-stream videos for up to 15 hours, and shoot three-hour time lapse videos thanks to the DJI Osmo Mobile 2’s non-removable long-life battery which can charge your mobile phone, too!

Super light, super portable.

Unlike its plastic-and-magnesium predecessors, this gimbal’s built out of a strong nylon composite, making it lighter at 485 grams and much less tiring to hold for extended periods. At a foldable 72 x 113 x 295 mm, it’s delightfully easy to stow and carry around, allowing you to take it anywhere and keep it handy for impromptu, on-the-spot shots. Ergonomically designed. The DJI Osmo Mobile 2 is easier to hold and fits comfortably in your hand.

Easy controls.

On top of the intuitive UI that comes with the DJI Go app, the Osmo’s 4-way joystick controls on its handle are great for positioning your shot before actual shooting. The main on/off button is also used for re-centring as well as switching to selfie mode and between panning and stills.

First-Time Foibles

It won’t be long before the DJI Osmo Mobile 2 raises your online game when you start uploading your videos. There are a few speed-bumps, however, that you’ll have to get over or work around when using this great new gimbal for the first time.

Fast-moving subjects.

ActiveTrack has a bit of a tough time keeping up when shooting subjects like kids or dogs who tend to move around quickly.

No mid-shot flips.

You won’t be able to flip your camera or switch between the front and rear cameras while shooting.

Manual orientation.

If you want to change the camera’s orientation, you will have to do so manually because of the counter-clockwise rotation of the clamp.

Limited joystick manoeuvrability.

The joystick is best used for positioning between shots, as it isn’t smooth enough to use during shooting.

Limited tilts.

You’ll only be able to tilt your camera phone up to 45 degrees. No mounts. You won’t be able to mount a cold shoe or a microphone.

Micro USB port.

Though you can use the Osmo’s USB-A port with a Lightning cable, a USB-C port might have been more convenient.

Spring-loaded clamp.

This feature takes some getting used to, as you just might drop either your phone or the gimbal itself if you’re loading on the move. Better to find somewhere you can stop over to lay the gimbal out flat and load the clamp there.

Compatibility.

The DJI Osmo Mobile 2 is just as great an iPhone gimbal as it is for an Android phone, but to be on the safe side, it’s a good idea to check your phone’s compatibility before buying.

Adjusting to heavier phones.

The gimbal’s motors might struggle with heavier smart phones, but this can be countered by making adjustments with the joystick.

Fantastic Value , Awesome Accessories

With the DJI Osmo Mobile 2, DJI has made what was once considered highly specialised accessory into a mainstream must-have.
