Introducing DJI Avata: An All-New FPV Drone Experience

Hot off the heels of the DJI Mini 3 Pro and DJI RS3 series earlier this year, DJI are following up the exciting first half of 2022 with a brand new drone release… Introducing the DJI Avata! The DJI Avata is a brand new Cinewhoop FPV drone built from the ground up to deliver an all-new FPV drone experience and unleash your creativity with new flight versatility and creative opportunities. Let’s dive in and break it all down.

What’s New?

An all-new drone means all-new levels of fun! The DJI Avata brings all-new creative possibilities for FPV pilots and genuinely might be DJI’s most fun drone to date, providing an immersive flight experience that can be enjoyed by professional FPV pilots and hobbyists alike.

An All-New Drone Design

If you’re used to the folding design on DJI’s recent drones like the DJI Mavic 3 and DJI Mini 3 Pro, you might be in for a bit of a surprise… The new DJI Avata ditches the folding arms featured on DJI’s Mavic, Air and Mini series drones for a brand new Cinewhoop drone design.

Whilst the Cinewhoop drone style has existed within the drone community for a significant period of time, the Avata is the first DJI drone to sport this design architecture, and brings with it new ways for pilots to enjoy flying and creating content.

All-New Flight Experience

Following in the footsteps of the DJI FPV drone, the DJI Avata offers a unique FPV flight experience that simply can’t be replicated by a traditional cinema-style camera drone like the DJI Mavic 3 or Air 2S. The Avata also flies unlike any other DJI drone with its unique Cinewhoop engineering using downward propulsion to power the drone. Bet you haven’t seen that on a DJI drone before!

But that’s not all. Pair the Avata with the new DJI Goggles 2 or the DJI FPV Goggles V2 and you’ll get to experience unique views and perspectives that no other drone, let alone camera, can provide.

What’s the Camera Like?

Only here to learn about the Avata’s camera? We’ve got you covered, let’s break down the camera.

Cinema-Ready Sensor

Just like its brothers and sisters across the DJI drone lineup, the DJI Avata features a killer camera engineered specifically for content creation.

Traditionally, Cinewhoop drones feature incredibly small, lightweight cameras that often compromise on image quality to keep their weight down. That’s not the case with Avata which sports a new 1/1.7” CMOS camera sensor.

The Avata’s 1/1.7” sensor is bigger than the sensor found in the fan-favourite DJI Mini 2’s gimbal camera (1/2.3” CMOS) and the DJI FPV drone. That means that the Avata now features the largest sensor on a DJI FPV series drone!

Superior Stability

RockSteady 2.0

How do you keep footage steady when you’re flying at 97 KM/h? Rocksteady 2.0, that’s how! DJI’s proprietary electronic image stabilisation software keeps images smooth and steady no matter how rocky your flight may get. This means that the Avata can capture cinema smooth footage even without the mechanical gimbal featured on traditional DJI drones.

HorizonSteady

Armed with a massive new camera sensor, the Mini 3 Pro can capture more data than ever before in each and every shot. This means that DJI has been able to implement HDR (high dynamic range) recording for the first time ever on DJI Mini. With HDR recording, you’ll capture more vivid colours and rich details in the shadows and highlights that are usually hidden away. Video has never looked this good from a drone this small.

What About the Drone Itself?

We’ve covered the Avata’s class-leading camera, now let’s break down the drone itself including its flight capabilities and more.

Fly Far, Far Away…

DJI pilots are accustomed to the freedom of industry-leading flight ranges across the DJI drone range; and that’s no different with the DJI Avata. Boasting a max video transmission range of 10 KM powered by DJI’s proprietary O3+ video transmission technology, DJI Avata can fly really, really far.

Fly Fast, Really Fast

The Avata wouldn’t be a true FPV drone if it couldn’t zip through the air at lightning speeds. Just like the DJI FPV, the Avata features three unique flight modes - Normal, Sport and Manual.

While the Avata can achieve a top speed of 50 KM/h in sport mode, the peak powers of the drone are truly unlocked in manual mode. Flick the switch to M mode and you can begin to zip through the skies at up to 97 KM/h. If that isn’t fast we don't know what is!

Super Safe

Just like every DJI drone, the DJI Avata is packed with safety features that help keep your drone safe in the sky whether you know it or not.

Halt and Hover

Just like its older brother the DJI FPV, the DJI Avata features an emergency brake feature that stops the drone mid-flight in a matter of milliseconds. Halt and hover allows pilots to avoid deadly obstacles and crashes by stopping flight and hovering in place.

Built-In Propeller Guards

Traditionally, DJI drones have propeller guards sold separately but the DJI Avata mixes things up with propeller guards integrated directly into the design of the drone. Yep, that’s right, those four large circles you spot on the DJI Avata drone are actually built-in propeller guards! These propeller guards provide a buffer between the Avata and obstacles to keep it ultra-safe.

Two Ways to Fly

Just like the high-flying DJI FPV drone released in early 2021, the DJI Avata features two different controller options to suit your piloting preferences. Pilots can opt for the intuitive free-flowing feeling of the DJI Motion Controller or stick to the traditional DJI FPV Remote Controller 2 for a video-gaming feel.

Brand New Visuals

A new drone means new peripherals, and the DJI Avata is no different. Say hello to the brand new DJI Goggles 2, FPV goggles done differently. Developed from the ground up, these new goggles completely change the game when it comes to flying FPV. Let’s take a look and see how.

Light as a Feather

The DJI Goggles 2 feature a lighter, more comfortable design when compared to its predecessor, the DJI FPV Goggles 2. The DJI Goggles 2 boasts a weight reduction of over 30% when compared to the DJI FPV Goggles V2, weighing in at under 290g. These new goggles also have more padding than the previous generation for greater comfort, especially when flying for long periods of time.

Full HD Lenses

Not only do the DJI Goggles 2 sport a new external design, the displays within the goggles have also seen a significant upgrade. The DJI Goggles 2 now feature full 1080 HD micro-OLED displays that make flying the DJI Avata a true delight. Higher resolution displays mean better imagery, better views and ultimately, better piloting as well.

Built-In Lens Correction

The previous generation DJI FPV Goggles V2 required additional corrective lenses (sold separately) for users with astigmatisms. That’s no longer the case with the DJI Goggles 2 which feature built-in corrective lenses that can be adjusted based on your needs. Talk about an upgrade.
